BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING
The Board of Trustees held their spring meeting on April 30 and May 1 in Washington, DC.

Highlights of the meeting include:

  • Presentation of the 2007 Audit report by AAEE's CPA firm (full audit information will be reprinted in the next issue of the Environmental Engineer).
  • Review of amended Articles of Incorporation
  • Approved 2009 Award Nominees
  • Approved Eminence Committee report
OFFICER ELECTIONS
The Ballots for electing the 2009 Officers and Trustees were mailed as part of the Environmental Engineer magazine the week of May 7. Ballots are due June 30, 2008.

AWARDS LUNCHEON
Kicking off this year's Academy Awards was a champagne reception featuring displays of the winning projects in the 2008 Excellence in Environmental Engineering® competition. At the Luncheon which followed the reception, individual awards were presented to:
  • SUPERIOR ACHIEVEMENT AWARD - CDM & MCi, Kay Bailey Hutchison Desalination Facilities

  • RESEARCH - GRAND PRIZE - Malcolm Pirnie, Inc., Glendale Demonstration- Scale Evaluation of Chlorite Ion to Control Nitrification in a Distribution System and Reserviors

  • RESEARCH - HONOR AWARD - CDM, Ozone Disinfection of Water Mains Research

  • PLANNING - GRAND PRIZE - Malcolm Pirnie, Inc., Granular Activated Carbon Master Planning Project

  • PLANNING - HONOR AWARD - CH2M Hill, Creating & Restoring Wetlands for River Temperature Reduction

  • PLANNING - HONOR AWARD - Malcolm Pirnie, Inc. and Hampton Roads Sanitation District, York River Treatment Plant Expansion Phase 1

  • DESIGN - GRAND PRIZE - CDM, Orange County Groundwater Replenishment System

  • DESIGN - HONOR AWARD - Joint Venture of Greeley and Hansen, Hazen and Sawyer, Malcolm Pirnie, Newtown Creek Water Pollution Control Plant

  • DESIGN - HONOR AWARD - Kennedy/Jenks Consultants, Redwood City Recycled Water Program

  • OPERATIONS/MANAGEMENT - GRAND PRIZE - AFCEE and CH2M Hill, SPEIM/LTM/O&M Program at MMR

  • OPERATIONS/MANAGEMENT - HONOR AWARD - Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, Making Water Work - Reclaiming Water and Land to Produce Viable Agriculture in the Antelope Valley

  • UNIVERSITY RESEARCH - Fungal Research Group, Iowa State University, Value-Added Products from Dry-Grind Corn Milling Stillage by Fungal Processing

  • SMALL PROJECTS - GRAND PRIZE - CDM, Reuse for Industrial, Agriculture, and Landscaping (RIAL)

AAEE MEETINGS
Regional Academy meetings have been organized. These are great opportunities to both learn and network with fellow Academy members. Make your plans to attend!

AAEE/AIDIS/AWWA LUNCHEON
The Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, June 11 at the Omni Hotel, Sycamore Room on Level M in Atlanta from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. AAEE will be exhibiting at the Conference in Booth #2405. Organized by Jerry Higgins.

AAEE/APWA BREAKFAST
The Breakfast will be held in New Orleans, Tuesday, August 19 at 7 a.m. The keynote speaker is George Crombie, Secretary of Natural Resources, State of Vermont, "The New Frontier: Managing Climate Change". Organized by Howard LaFever.

AAEE/AIDIS/WEF BREAKFAST
The Breakfast will be held on Monday, October 20 from 7:30 to 9 a.m in Chicago. The featured speaker is Richard E. Lanyon, P.E., BCEE, General Superintendent, Chicago Water Reclamation District. For information on registering go to http://www.weftec.org. The Academy will be exhibiting again this year at WEFTEC'08 in Booth #18076. Organized by Dick Kuchenrither.

AAEE EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS ON CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS IMPACT ON WATER AND WASTEWATER UTILITIES:
  • June 10 at the AWWA National Conference ACE'08 in Atlanta.
  • June 22-25 - Sustainability 2008 - Green Practices for the Water Environment will be hosted by the WEF with support of the US EPA at the Gaylord National on the Potomac, National Harbor, Maryland. For more information go to the WEF website.
  • October 18 - Joint Pre-Conference Workshop - WEFTEC'08 in Chicago
