The American Academy of Environmental Engineers operates the nation's first and oldest specialty certification program to board-certify those engineers with expertise in one of seven specialties of environmental engineering practice for the public's benefit. Those who have been certified can be accessed through Who's Who in Environmental Engineering. CERTIFICATION IN BRIEF

The Academy's certification program includes peer review of an individual's work experience coupled with practice-oriented written and oral examinations. To be considered for certification, the engineer must possess:

• A baccalaureate degree or higher in engineering or a related field;
• A valid Professional Engineer's license issued by one of the fifty states or U.S. territories or a foreign country equivalent (not a requirement for Board Certified Members); and
• Eight years or more of progressively responsible environmental engineering experience in one or more specialties of environmental engineering practice.

After successfully completing the peer review and associated examinations, the person will earn the title, Board Certified Environmental Engineer (represented by the initials BCEE) or Board Certified Member (represented by the initials BCM) in one of the following specialties:

•   Air Pollution Control
•   General Environmental Engineering
•   Hazardous Waste Management
•   Industrial Hygiene Engineering
•   Radiation Protection Engineering
•   Solid Waste Management
•   Water Supply/Wastewater Engineering

To maintain this certification, each BCEE and BCM is required to obtain a specified minimum amount of continuing professional development each year to remain current with changing environmental engineering practice. The Academy ensures that this education is obtained through an audited, annual recertification of each BCEE and BCM.
